Film Screening @The UN: The Boy from Geita

October 15, 2015

Students and faculty of the Institute of African Studies are invited to a special screening of The Boy from Geita on October 15th at the UN Headquarters. The film reveals the danger of having albinism in Tanzania. People with albinism are targeted for their body parts which can command huge sums from witchdoctors who believe they have magical powers. Adam, a young boy featured in the film, is attacked in his home. He is fortunate enough to receive help from a Canadian organization that secures reconstructive surgery for his hand and relocates him to a safe boarding school in Tanzania.

Next week’s screening is sponsored by the Embassy of Canada, Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and UNICEF Disability Section. Filmmaker Vic Sarin and film subject Peter Ash will appear for a Q&A after the screening.
