The Dakar Institute of African Studies is an accredited center of learning and research housed in the West African Research Center (WARC) in Fann Residence, a well-known suburb of Dakar. The Dakar Institute provides a summer program as well as research and internship opportunities in Senegal for undergraduate students interested in developing their knowledge of Africa.
Courses
The DIAS Summer Program introduces students to and develops their knowledge of African cultures through four major tracks: African Studies, Francophone Studies, African Languages, and Education. Courses will be taught in English, French, or Wolof depending on the subject matter.
Field Trips
Field trips are integrated as an experiential component of the DIAS Summer Program. They include organized trips to traditional villages, ecological landmarks, religious centers, museums, and other sites of cultural and historical significance.
Internships
The Dakar Institute offers exciting opportunities in hands-on learning through an internship program, offering work- and service-related experience to students through traditional internships and service learning as well as community service programs in fields such as health, music, education, politics, and environment.
Faculty and Staff
The Dakar Institute includes U.S.-based university professors, language instructors, and staff with extensive experience and research in Africa and Europe. The factuly's diverse specialties include African history, philosophy, literature, French and Wolof languages, religion, postcolonial studies, gender studies, and education.
Requirements
The DIAS Summer Program is open to all regularly enrolled undergraduate students in good standing with a GPA of 2.5 or higher and an interest in Africa-related issues.
Living Arrangements
Students coming from the U.S. and Europe will have the opportunity to live with experienced host families during their academic studies.
