Call for Papers: Mazrui Seminar (Thursday, October 15, 2015 – Herndon, VA)
The International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT) is commemorating the first death anniversary of Prof. Dr. Ali. A. Mazrui (1933-2014)by convening a one-day seminar devoted to his extensive scholarship on Islam in Africa as well as Islam and Globalization. In doing so, IIIT would also like to honor the close and lasting relationship between Dr. Mazrui and IIIT.
The seminar will be held on Thursday, October 15, 2015, at IIIT office in Herndon, Virginia.
Dr. Mazrui is well-known as a trendsetting scholar who achieved great heights in his career. During his lifetime, Dr. Mazrui earned numerous accolades, including the IIIT Distinguished Scholar Award in 2011. He was also Editor-in-Chief of the American Journal of Islamic Social Sciences (AJISS), IIIT’s peer-reviewed journal. In addition, Prof. Mazrui bequeathed his collection of papers to IIIT.
IIIT is currently soliciting papers that focus on, or are inspired by Dr. Mazrui’s contributions – theoretical, social-scientific, or empirical – on Islam in Africa and Islam and Globalization. The list of topic may include, but is not limited to, the following:
- Monotheism and Africa
- The Islamic Influence in Africa
- Muslim Plurality in Africa
- Pax Africana and Pax Islamica
- Mazrui’s Triple Heritage: Africa, Islam, and the West
- Mazrui: Africanist, Islamicist, or Globalist?
- Africa and the Arabic language
- Mazrui: Between Islamization and Globalization
- Islam and Christianity: Conflict, Competition, and Cooperation
The seminar will also feature an opening lecture, “Mazrui’s Contributions to Understanding the Cultural Dimensions of Globalization,” delivered by Prof. James Mittelmanof American University, and a panel of scholars who are intimately familiar with Prof. Mazrui’s life and legacy.
Please submit a 500-word abstract and an academic CV by Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2015. If accepted, the participants will be required to submit a full paper of not less than 5,000 words by October 8. Selected papers will be published by IIIT after the seminar.
The IIIT will cover travel expenses (up to $500) and provide hotel accommodation for paper presenters.
