Institute of African Studies Student Fellowships for Study or Research in Africa
Spring Deadline: March 14, 2025 at 5:00 PM.
The Institute of African Studies is pleased to offer two $1,000 student fellowships to support travel, research, or study in Africa, including language study. One fellowship is dedicated to general research in Africa, while the other focuses specifically on China-Africa projects. These fellowships are open to both graduate and undergraduate students.

Please submit the following documents in the below order as a single, merged .pdf.
- Completed application form. Download the application form from this link and complete the form in Microsoft Word.
- NOTE: You must be signed in to your LionMail to access the application form.
- Statement of Purpose (700 words maximum), outlining:
- The fellowship you are applying for (China-Africa or Study and/or Research in Africa)
- Description of the research and/or study to be undertaken
- Preparation for the project or training to be undertaken
- The potential significance of the research to the field of study and/or your own educational enrichment
- The project’s duration and itinerary
- Names of affiliated research centers and other relevant organizations, as well as any in-country advisors or supervisors
- Budget, including airfare, in-country transportation, housing, and other related expenses as well as funds already secured or applying for and their amounts.
- Copy of unofficial transcript
In order for your application to be considered, one letter of recommendation from a Columbia or Barnard faculty member must be submitted on your behalf. Your recommendation letter must be uploaded by your recommender by March 14th, 2025 at 5:00 PM at this link.
