Asia and Africa: Partners in Progress

Edited by

Suresh Kumar and Faisal Ahmed

Asia and Africa are connected through Mediterranean Sea, Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, Gulf of Oman, Persian Gulf and the Indian Ocean. The economic history of colonialism resulted into divided boundaries and intense social stratification. But the two continents have learnt to live together by dint of their political cooperation, economic engagements and most importantly, the shared cultural beliefs and value systems. This is evident in the cooperation in issues as significant as agriculture, infrastructure, food security, oil and gas, and political and cultural cooperation, amongst others.

Political issues (e.g. unresolved border issues, terrorism, etc.); socio-economic challenges (e.g. poverty, illiteracy, child and maternal health, poor infrastructure etc.); and, governance dilemmas (e.g. poor progress in fulfillment of MDGs, democracy and development, economic slowdown etc.) are becoming deterrents to cooperation and development. The recent Asian African Summit held in April 2015 in the Indonesian capital of Jakarta, marking the 60th anniversary of the Bandung Conference, called for a ‘Ten Principles’ of cooperation in its communiqué.

The discourses, both on policy and practice, have revealed that it is the century of the global South to strengthen political, economic and social cooperation, and to create and maintain peace and prosperity through mutual interactions. Asia and Africa, therefore, must share the resources, technology, human resource, development assistance, infrastructural funding, and above all, a shared vision for global growth.

Such engagements will help sustain livelihoods in days to come.

Themes: Given this backdrop, we are coming out with an edited book on “Asia and Africa: Partners in Progress” by December 2015.
