The Max Planck Institute for the History of Science (MPIWG) is offering up to two short-term fellowships (1-6 months) in the Department on Knowledge Systems and Collective Life. These fellowships support scholars researching histories of knowledge and collective life in Africa, particularly those affiliated with African universities and research institutions. This initiative builds on the MPIWG’s project, “An African History of Knowledge and Science beyond Academic Conventions” (2022-2024), and aligns with the department’s focus on cross-cultural knowledge systems and alternative perspectives on science and technology.

Fellowships provide a stipend and are open to scholars at all career stages whose work relates to the department’s core research themes. Applications must be submitted electronically through the special application portal by May 1, 2025. The fellowship begins September 1, 2025, or later. More details on eligibility, conditions, and application procedures can be found on the MPIWG Fellowship Program website
