From the Classroom to the Continent: A Lunchtime Conversation on Opportunities for Collaboration and Exchange with the Global Centers at Nairobi and Tunis

Event Description: A lunchtime conversation to explore ways of broadening and deepening partnerships between the Columbia’s African/a Studies community in New York and the Columbia Global Centers across Africa. Topics for conversation will include collaborative curricular initiatives, expanding academic exchange with continent-based colleagues, joint research initiatives, and community engagement efforts that promote African-centered knowledge production. Colleagues from the Global Centers in Africa will also examine issues of academic freedom, funding and aid dynamics, and evolving political landscapes in their respective regions—to better understand the opportunities and constraints shaping higher education and research on the continent today.

  • Dr. Murugi Ndirangu, Director, Columbia Global Center in Nairobi, covering East and Southern Africa
  • Mr. Youssef Cherif, Director, Columbia Global Center in Tunis, covering North and West Africa.
